Building connections through play and community

Videotron wanted to bring Québecers together around their national sport, not in an arena, but right in their neighbourhoods. We designed and developed an online game that turns hockey into a city-wide, connected experience. Accessible, playful, and participatory, Neighborhood Hockey invites everyone to step outside, play, and rediscover the simple joy of being together.

Our mandate

Create a participatory, scalable, and engaging platform that motivates people to get moving, connect, and celebrate winter in their own way.

  • Deliver a simple, engaging game experience
  • Encourage collaboration and team spirit
  • Enable smooth, autonomous client-side management
  • Track participation and results in real time
  • Use technology to strengthen human connections

Our approach

We didn’t just design a game: we imagined an ecosystem where technology amplifies togetherness.

The experience is built on a simple idea: bringing the spirit of street hockey into the digital world without losing the spontaneity that makes it so unifying.

Accessible on any device, the platform allows each player to create, join, or host a game, and climb the leaderboard by completing challenges, confirming participation, or earning player-of-the-game stars. The result is a friendly, inclusive competition full of energy and good vibes.

The game experience

You don’t have to leave the neighbourhood to feel the energy of a real game

Each participant chooses their role:

  • Captain — Creates a game, manages the details, and invites friends using a unique link.
  • Player — Joins a game, confirms participation, and connects with teammates.
  • Spectator — Cheers players on and shares the experience on social media.

Technical note

Developed as a Progressive Web App, a technology choice well suited for an outdoor event, easy to deploy and accessible to everyone.

Team spirit and friendly competition

Play, progress, and climb the leaderboard

Every action counts: inviting friends, confirming attendance, completing challenges, or naming a player of the game earns points. The more players get involved, the higher they climb in the rankings and the stronger the community becomes.

A connected experience

Integrated tools that bring players closer together

Designed for simplicity and community, the platform encourages interaction and coordination through built-in social features.

Notifications

Players receive automatic reminders before games and real-time updates on leaderboard progress.

Game details

An interactive game card displays match information, the exact location, and registered participants.

In-app chat

Teams can chat, share strategies, or simply cheer each other on before the game.

Why it mattered

From the alley to digital without losing the spirit of the game

Videotron Neighborhood Hockey proves that a well-designed digital tool can do more than connect screens. It can bring people closer together. In just a few weeks, thousands of players created, joined, and shared friendly games across the city, recreating the energy of street hockey… version 2.0.

By combining accessibility, playfulness, and innovation, the project transformed the simple idea of “going outside to play” into a living, measurable community experience.
